Bunda began as a family townhouse behind the old harbour on the Batang Arau, in the quarter where Padang’s spice traders once lived. We kept the worn teak stairs, the tall shutters, the courtyard where three generations ate together — and opened the doors to travellers.
The idea is simple, and it’s the oldest one in Minangkabau culture: merantau and pulang— you go out into the world, and you come home. Here you come home to a mother’s welcome. Someone asks if you’ve eaten. There is always more rendang. You are family for as long as you stay.
